Makiling Ensemble Sample Repertoire Instrumental Pieces Original Songs Arrangements Instrumental Pieces 1) Balse T'boli The ensemble's very first piece. Composed for hegalong, guitar, violin, flute and percussion. 2) Medyo Modern no. 1 Usually used as the finale piece for ending gig sets or concerts. Played with violins, guitar and percussion. 3) Laro Derived from a melody by Joey Ayala but re-arranged and is hardly distinguishable from the source. For hegalong, guitar, violins, flute and percussion. 4) Sinalimbay One of the ensemble's most popular pieces, it has been choreographed three times by different dance groups. The latest to choreograph the piece is the UP Filipiniana Dance Troupe. It is written for violins, guitar and percussion. 5) Arabian Melody A piece with a repeating melody with constant change in the accompaniament. For violins, flute, guitar and percussion. 6) Indian Ragas One of the most energetic pieces of the ensemble. It utilizes chanting and melodies based on an Indian scale. It also incorporates lots of sections for improvisation. For violins, chanter, guitar and percussion. 7) Keltic Tune A piece inspired by traditional bagpipe music from Scotland. Played with violins, flute, guitar and percussion. 8) Kajali Based on traditional Yakan music, this is one of the ensemble's instrumentally varied pieces. Composed for hegalong, gabbang(bamboo xylophone), cello, violin, flute and percussion. 9) Pasimula The usual introductory piece of the ensemble, it begins with a common melody played by the whole group and improvised later on as each instrumentalist gets to do a solo ad lib. Instrumental composition may vary as to what instruments are present at the performance itself. 10) Makiling no. 1 A piece inspired by the beauty and lushness of Mount Makiling. For flute, cello and guitar. Sometimes played with percussion. 11) Aboriginal Dance no. 1 Utilizes the didjeridu, an Australian Aboriginal blowpipe that creates a deep, resonating drone sound. Traditionally used by the Aboriginees for dancing. Composed for didjeridu and percussion. 12) Aboriginal Dance no. 2 Same instrumentation as the first piece but uses a different rhythmic accompaniament. 13) Sinulog Trio in D A piece based on the Maguindanao Rhythmic mode, Sinulog. Written for hegalong, violin and cello. 14) Hegalong Sextet A piece with a definite Oriental flavor. For hegalong, two violins, flute, cello and kubing. Original Songs 1) Huling Paalam A song commissioned by the Center for the Arts in San Antonio, San Miguel (CASA San Miguel). With lyrics by National hero Dr. Jose Rizal, the song was premiered at CASA San Miguel and sung by folk singer, Noel Cabangon. 2) Pag-ibig sa Tinubuang Lupa Another song commissioned by CASA San Miguel. Another song crafted from the lyrics of revolutionary Gat. Andres Bonifacio. Also premiered at CASA San Miguel. 3) Eastern Rhythms First Makiling Ensemble song with original lyrics. For hegalong, voice, guitar and percussion. Arrangements 1) Talambuhay Written by singer and songwriter Joey Ayala, Makiling Ensemble altered the arrangement of the piece thus creating a more original flavor. 2) Bunso Written by theater artist Junivic Andrion, a former faculty at the Philippine High School for the Arts. The song is a lullaby that discusses about moving on in the course of life. 3) Kanlungan A locally popular love song by Buklod, Makiling Ensemble arranged it for violin and guitar. Back to top |
